Hearts for the Homeless, a faith based non-profit, was founded in 1990 with a mission to serve the chronic homeless as well as other underserved populations. Hearts is able to fund its mission through donor support and entrepreneurial ventures such as the thrift store operation and donated goods recycling program. The red clothing donation bins provide items that are given away to those in need. Donated items are also turned into dollars which support outreach programs such as the mobile soup kitchen and food pantry.

Position Summary: 

The Thrift Store Associate will be responsible for providing excellent service to customers of the Hearts Thrift Store and helps to maintain the store’s appearance and efficient operations. They are responsible for the daily operations of the shop to include opening and closing of the shop, cash register operation, receiving & processing of donations and merchandising the shop sales floor. As a Thrift Store Associate you will serve within our ministry by directly impacting our ability to serve those in need by receiving and selling items donated for resale.

Essential Functions:

  • Price and stock merchandise for sale in the thrift shop

  • Maintains accurate receipts of all sales and donations

  • Greet customers as they enter and depart the store

  • Screen and accept incoming donations followed by offering receipts for donors.

  • Separate and sort incoming donated materials.

  • Tag, price, and arrange merchandise for display.

  • Replenish stock and keep the display area in order.

  • Sell merchandise to customers and give information about products and prices.

  • Provide shopping support to customers by answering questions about our products, addressing the needs of customers.

  • Operate a cash register and Point of Sale system.

  • Take inventories of needed merchandise and reports to the manager.

  • Work with volunteers and be able to give clear direction.

  • Facilitate store opening and end of day closeout.

  • Resolve customer complaints and ensure client satisfaction.

  • Acts independently and responsibly to perform job duties on a consistent basis

  • Perform other duties assigned.

Education, Experience and Work Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.

  • Reliable and punctual attendance, with availability to work flexible shifts.

  • Sales experience preferred.

  • Experience working with volunteers is preferred.

  • Ability to multi-task and function in a fast-paced environment.

  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.

  • Must be able to lift and move boxes and bags of donated items up to 35 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent customer service and people skills.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and multi-tasking skills.

  • Principles and practices of supervising, training and evaluating staff.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Computer skills including Point of Sales System, Google Docs, email, Microsoft Word & Excel.

  • Ability to reconcile daily receipts for accounting purposes and perform bookkeeping duties.

Job Type: Full-time and Part-time positions available
