Cook and Outreach Assistant

Position Summary:  

The Cook and Outreach Assistant (COA) is responsible to ensure the various outreach programs of Hearts, both permanent and temporary, are provided with the necessary prepared food and supplies to meet our program goals. COA will be able to meet these goals by cooking large quantities of food utilizing their own skill set and through using both individual volunteers and groups.

Essential Functions:  

  • Support the Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator in tasks related to the operations of the ministry
  • Manage and lead volunteers to complete kitchen and ministry related tasks
  • Cooking and preparing hot and cold meals in quantities of hundreds at a time
  • Responsible for proper inventory and ordering of supplies
  • Receive orders and stock purchased supplies and food
  • Sort and stock donations of food and other items for the ministry
  • Clean Kitchen and Equipment on a regular basis
  • Accept and organize small and large donations of food and other items for the ministry
  • Clean, organize, stock and prepare the Mobile Soup Kitchen vehicle for nightly volunteer use
  • Tabulate and generate reports and disseminate information to make operational decisions
  • Coordinate volunteers for the kitchen help
  • Coordinate off site community outreach events
  • Coordinate food and deliveries for partnership agencies
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Assist in coordinating campus events and activities such as holiday giveaways and monthly mobile food pantry events
  • Provides coverage to Hearts Campus thrift store retail team members as needed 

Education Requirements and Qualifications:  

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred 
  • Servsafe Certification is required 
  • Food prep/related certificates or degrees are beneficial but not required.
  • Volunteer leadership or ministry involvement may be advantageous
  • 1-3 years of work experience in commercial cooking/kitchen environments and/or relevant field
  • Work independently and as part of a team
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Can communicate with a diverse mix of volunteers, donors and supporters.
  • Proficient in relevant technology including but not limited to smart phones, G-Suite, Microsoft Word/Excel 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Able to work effectively independently or part of a team.
  • Must have reliable transportation.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $17.00 to $20.00 per hour

Schedule: Monday through Saturday 

Experience: 1-3 years of work experience in commercial cooking/kitchen environments and/or relevant field preferred
